Wildcats end 15 year drought
against BYU

Just hours after the football team advanced to the third round of the FCS playoffs, the Weber State men’s basketball team sent in-state rival BYU back to Provo with a 113–103 win. The victory snapped the 15-game streak of the Cougars over the Wildcats.“It was good to end that drought and it was a fun game to play,” Wildcat guard Jerrick Harding said. BYU came into Ogden with a 5-3 record after losing their previous two games against the University of Houston and Illinois State. For the Wildcats, this win improves their record to 5-2 in the early season. The first half was a story of Weber State versus BYU’s leading scorer and rebounder, Yoeli Childs. He led all scorers with 16 at the half, but nobody for the Cougars team had scored in double figures. In opposition to Childs’ one-man wrecking crew, the Wildcats had three scorers in double figures leading to a one point lead on a buzzer-beater to end the half. Weber State kept themselves in the game with their three-point shooting, going 6 of 16, while the Cougars only made one three-pointer the entire half. Harding netted 12 points in 12 minutes in the first half, ultimately finishing the game with a team-high 30 (11-17). “We tried almost every guy we had on him. Luckily, he got in foul trouble in the first half or he would have scored 50,” BYU coach Dave Rose said. Once the second half started, the momentum shifted to Weber State who got out to an 11 point lead with 13:35 left to play. BYU guard, Jahshire Hardnett and Childs did all they could to keep the Cougars in the game after trailing 15 at one point. However, winning is an uphill battle when only two players score over 8 points the entire game. Hardnett finished with a career high of 24 points (11-15), while Childs led all scorers with 31 points (13-23), adding seven rebounds. The Cougars second leading scorer on the season, TJ Haws was held to 8 points (1-9)...

Inside the Numbers:
Second Round FCS Playoffs

The Southeast Missouri State University Redhawks will face the second seed Weber State University Wildcats in the second round of the 2018 FCS playoffs on Dec.1. The rested Wildcats enjoyed a Thanksgiving bye week while the Redhawks eliminated Stony Brook with a 28–14 rout in their first-round matchup. Despite giving up over 400 yards of offense and losing the first down battle, Southeast Missouri State found a way to get the job done on the defensive end by forcing four turnovers. On the other side of the ball, junior quarterback Daniel Santacaterina led the Redhawk offense with four touchdowns, including one rushing. The teams took different paths to the same destination. The Redhawks are fueled by their efficient offense but have struggled on defense throughout the year.On the other hand, the Wildcats thrive on defense but have shown that scoring can be a challenge, especially if they don’t get the running game going. The red-hot Redhawks come into Ogden winning seven of their last eight games, partially thanks to their well-balanced offensive attack. Senior running back Marquis Terry has been the workhorse on the ground for the Redhawks with 1,293 yards and 14 touchdowns on 206 carries so far this season. Terry will need to be at his best against the 17th ranked run defense in the FCS. “We know they have a solid running game, so that’s one area we are really focused on stopping,” sophomore safety Trey Hoskins said.

Wildcats lassoed by Cowboys

At the end of a three-game set at home, the Weber State University hockey team fell 6–2 to the University of Wyoming Cowboys. Both team’s fought tooth and nail through the first period, hitting the first intermission with a 0–0 tie. After a slow first period, both teams got more aggressive with their offensive attacks. The Wildcats capitalized on two of their six shots in the second period. Their first goal was scored by Jake Webber, only 41 seconds into the second period. Later in the period, the Wildcats got a shorthanded goal by Alex Pizarro, with Chance Aquino picking up the assist for the Wildcats. The Wildcats refused to go down without a fight, finishing the third period with 23 shots to Wyoming’s 13. Despite the surplus of opportunities given up by Wyoming in the third period, Weber State could not capitalize on their shots.

“We lost our intensity. We didn’t do the things that helped us win the last two games, such as being aggressive, being the first to the puck, and winning the battles,” head coach Clay Hobbs said. “We just decided it would be easier not to do that tonight and we just didn’t play hard.” This loss puts the Wildcats at 11–16–1 on the season as they head to Provo to take on Grand Canyon University at the Peaks Ice Arena on Feb. 1.

Eagles' guard eclipses Lillard's
Big Sky record

With WSU alum Damian Lillard courtside, the crowd got to witness a scoring clinic. But instead of it being “Dame Time,” it was “Bliz Time.” With the WSU great in attendance, Bliznyuk reached 1,996 career points. That’s good for fifth in Big Sky Conference history, passing Lillard in the process of the win over the Wildcats. Bliznyuk dominated the entirety of the second half for the Eagles, shooting 8 of 12 from the field and scoring 13 of their first 21 points in the second half. Bliznyuk finished with a game-high 27 points after just eight first-half points. He added seven rebounds in the game. “He’s got size for a guard and handles the ball really well,” said senior Ryan Richardson, who had the task of guarding Bliznyuk for most of the game. “He’s crafty, and when he gets in the lane, there’s not much you can do. You have to try your best to make him shoot threes and tough, contested shots inside the arc. He’s just a good player overall.” Bliznyuk ended up too much for the Wildcats to handle as he sealed the game with his 65th-consecutive-made free throw to give the Eagles a 75–70 win.
